An ultrasonic flow meter is a type of flow meter that uses ultrasound to measure a fluid's velocity and calculate its volume flow. By averaging the difference in transit times between ultrasound pulses propagating into and against the flow direction or by measuring the frequency shift from the Doppler effect, the flow meter can measure the average velocity along the path of an emitted ultrasound beam using ultrasonic transducers. Depending on the specific flow meter, the acoustic characteristics of the fluid can also have an impact on ultrasonic flow meters, as can temperature, density, viscosity, and suspended particles.
